Evaluation of Colored Gemstones

Posted by admin. Comments Off.

When in the process of buying colored gemstones, almost all customers tend to focus on the fair prices alone. On the other hand, when the shopping is all about precious and beautiful jewelry such as diamonds or gold, they tend to be keener on the quality. This is because it is very easy to spot a flaw on a very sparkly gem than the colored ones. Therefore chances are high that a big proportion of colored gemstones bought at a given period by ignorant buyers could actually be faulty. This being a rampant case, it is imperative to address the question of gemstone ratings or evaluation to help customers make perfect choices before closing a sale.

A grouping of faceted gemstones

Colored gemstones are given value and evaluated using the common rating system of precious diamonds gems, four C’s meaning; cut, clarity, carat and color. The result from this is between the AAA to D where the latter represent the worst quality colored gemstones. These grades is what a customer should be able to recognize when they are about to shop for a piece of jewelry, where A is normally the good quality gem. At this grade, the stone cut is perfect and it’s transparent. The AA is better while AAA is the best-colored gemstone you can find in some unique gems such as sapphire or emerald whilst amethyst or garnet take the second best.
Additionally before getting to the D, the poorest, grade B evaluated colored gemstone has some additional less detectable flaws and even though it is still transparent, the color is not optimally good. These are typically used to manufacture the small gems in jewelry whereas C evaluated stones are used as surface decorations. This is because they have very evident flaws, opaque and thus cannot allow light to pass through, making them dull and less enticing to the eye. As per the above information, it is evident that it cannot be easy for less informed customer to end up buying grade AAA colored gemstone without a detailed report on the four Cs rating scale and they should ask for it.
